Firewall is piece of software that guards against unwanted access to your computer and network.It functions as a security guard , examining every piece of data attempting to enter or exit your network and determining whether to permit or prohibit it depending on security criteria.

To put it simply: Similar to gatekeeper, firewall guards your home (your network)against online threats.
