What is Network

What is Network

  • A Network  consist of of a number of different computer systems / Devices connected by physical and wireless connections.
  •  All networks allow computers and individuals to share information and resources.
  • Computer networks serve a number of purposes, some of which include:
    • Shared hardware like  printers and scanners.
    • Shared storage devices are used to share information and data.
    • Communications such as email, instant messaging, chat rooms, etc.
    • We can run software on remote sites computers by utilizing network  resources.

Initial Networks Background

  •  computer systems initially  were Standalone devices.
  • All the systems  were connected to each device.
  •  Printers, Storage (Hard Drives), Scanners were used as main source with computers.
  • If any person wants to take a  print of a document, as you know at that time there was no shared medium he will copy all required documents in Floppy or USB Device and will attach to that pc with whom printer is attached. Then he will take print.
  • This was much loss of time of any productive company.
  • As people came to know the importance of shared  Network, they attached printer  with one pc and it was shared with all computers.if any user needs to print a document ,he can easily take prints without wasting time.

Network Connections

1. Wireless Networks

A wireless network uses radio waves instead of cables. It’s much easier to set up since there’s no need to run wires everywhere. This type of network is now common in homes, schools, and offices because it allows devices to connect from anywhere within range.

2. Wired Networks

A wired network, on the other hand, uses cables to connect devices like computers and printers. All these cables usually go to a main device called a hub or switch. Wired connections are more stable and often faster than wireless ones.

Types of Networks

Personal Area Network (PAN)

A PAN is the simplest network, usually made for one person or a household. It can include a router, phones, tablets, laptops, and maybe a printer. These are the networks most people have at home.

Local Area Network (LAN)

A LAN cover up a small area like an office or school. It lets computers share files, applications, and even internet connections. When several LANs are connected together, a router usually manages the connection.

Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)

A MAN is larger than a LAN but covers less area than a WAN. It connects several LANs across a city. For instance, cable TV companies and city-wide internet providers use MANs to link many buildings within the same region.

Wide Area Network (WAN)

A WAN relates computers over long distances— sometimes across countries or even continents. It links multiple LANs and MANs so users can communicate as if they were nearby. The internet is the  well-known example of a WAN.

Conclusion

Networks completely changed the way computers communicate and share resources. From small personal setups to huge global systems, networking helps people stay connected, exchange information, and work together more efficiently in the digital world.
